There was pandemonium on Friday along Jakpa Road in Effurun in the Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State following the killing of a mobile policeman by gunmen.
It was gathered that after killing the policeman, the hoodlums carted away the service rifle of the slain cop.
The deceased was said to have been shot repeatedly while he was on escort duty.
The vehicle of a yet-to-be identified individual he was detailed to protect was said to have stopped along the road to purchase some items when the gunmen struck
The incident occurred at about 2:30pm.
The incident forced residents and shop owners along the busy Jakpa Road to flee for safety.
It was further gathered that the hoodlums waited until their target gave up the ghost before zooming off to an unknown destination.
It was not clear if the bandits also attacked the individual that the slain mobile cop was meant to protect.
The rate of criminality especially in the Warri and Effurun axises of the state has been on the increase, a situation that forced Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to inaugurate a special security outfit, “Operation Delta Hawk”, on Thursday.
At least five mobile policemen have been killed and their arms carted away within the past two months, in the state.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident when contacted.
She could not, however, give further details about the deceased cop.
