The Managing Director of the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), Limited (Subsidiary of NNPC), Warri, Delta State, Engr Seyi Omotowa, has said that encroachment of gas pipeline right of way, was not only dangerous but also a crime punishable by the laws of the land.
Engr Seyi said this on Monday, when he kicked-off an enlightenment campaign on the danger of Gas Pipeline encroachment and vandalism, in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.
The enlightenment campaign which took off from the Palace of the Ohi of Eganyi kingdom, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Musa Isah Achuja, in Ajaokuta Local Government Council Area of Kogi State.
Witnessed a road show where the people around the community were sensitized about the dangers involved in encroachment of gas pipelines.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of NGC, Warri, Delta State, Engr Seyi Omotowa, noted that encroachment of gas pipeline right of way, was not only dangerous but also a crime punishable by the laws of the land.
Represented by the Public Affairs Manager of NGC, Mr Darlington Samuel, Omotowa told the crowd that gathered at the palace that encroachment of gas pipelines can lead to lose of life and property.
He further advised those who are farming and building houses on gas pipeline right of way to desist from such actions as it could lead to disaster.
“We should not go and farm on top of pipeline, we should not build on the pipelines, or set fire on top of pipeline in the name of bush burning, if there is any fire outbrake you or any property around the pipeline will not be recognized as there is no duplicate in life because health is life.
“It is good to learn from people /victims of fire incident because according to white man saying health is wealth and life. If you see any children playing around pipeline/tip of pipeline, drive them, stop anyone doing business in pipeline.
On his part, The youth president of the Ajaokuta community during his speech said, “it is my prayer that we will not only be a hearer but also the dower of the message, we will also do our work by taking the message to those who are not here.
Also, speaking, HRM, Muhammed Adambe, the Adogu of Eganyi, Ajaokuta local government area of Kogi state. Said, ” the best way to learn is to be educated and informed.”
“You are welcome to our community for giving us this kind of education.
This message is a good one. Those who are in charge of laying those pipelines, let them be good pipes. They should not be infiror pipelines because it will lead to Explosion.”
“There should be surverlance around the pipelines, our prayers is, there should not be any casualties. We are happy for this message and we will take it to our people who are not here, But please, take this message to the government. We need our people to be employed. “
Alhaji Suleiman Sheid, who represented the Onu of Ajaokuta. Said, “we believed in peace and total support to any Federal government project. But the right of the communities were the NGC pipelines Cris -cross must be protected by giving them their benefits and entitlement as host community.”
