Jungle Justice: Three Community leaders arrested by Police for alleged murder in Lagos

Police operatives from Ikotun Division of the Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday, April 7, arrested 3 community leaders in the Ikotun, Lagos State for allegedly lynching a suspected burglar.

The Police Public Relation Officer of Lagos State Command, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi made the disclosure in a statement issued to The Nations Express on Thursday.

He said the burglar was lynched to death after an alleged attempt to rob one Mrs Adeyemi Opeyemi.

Adejobi in the statement reiterated that the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumusu frowns on jungle justice and that those who are fond of taking the law into their own hands will not go unpunished

Part of his statement reads, “The burglar had gained entrance into the room of one Mrs Adeyemi Opeyemi, f, of No 2, Asalu Bus Stop, off Abaranje Road, Ikotun, Lagos in an attempt to rob her but she raised the alarm and the burglar escaped into the street where some members of the community apprehended and beat him to death.”

“The community leaders arrested include Sakariyau Biliaminu, John Adeyemi, and Gabriel Ajayi. These suspects have some questions to answer pertaining to the killing of the suspect.”

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem, has condemned the act of jungle justice meted out to the suspect and vowed to kick against such in the state as it is becoming rampant and such is inimical to our collective efforts to improve on the Criminal Justice System of Lagos State,” the statement revealed.

In another development, the PPRO said that Police attached to Ojo Division on April 6, apprehended 3 suspected traffic robbers at Alaba Market area. He said they were arrested for attacking innocent commuters in Ojo area of Lagos state.

He gave the identities of the suspects as Ibrahim Mohammed, Arinze Victor and Bashiru Ammo.

He said that as a follow up to the investigation, the Police arrested 4 other robbers who double as receivers of the suspected traffic robbers arrested in Alaba area. He gave their identities as Bello Jafaru, Nuru Abdullahi, Nafiu Saray, and Bashiru Mohammed, all of Kasuwan-Dare Alaba Rago, Ojo, Lagos.

“The suspects have confessed to the crime of attacking and dispossessing commuters and innocent Lagosians of their belongings along Ojo-Iba Road, ” he added.

Speaking further, he said, “Again, the policemen attached to Ojo Division, on 7th April, 2021, at about 3.30am, in another operation, nabbed a set of suspected traffic robbers, in conjunction with some members of the Alaba Rago Market, Ojo, along Iyana Iba to PPL, Area of Lagos.”

“The suspects are Mathew Christopher, Babangida Umoru, Babangida Abdullahi, m, all of no fixed addresses”.

He said they were arrested with some weapons like knives, cutlasses, broken bottles and other offensive weapons.

He said that the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered that all the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for proper investigation and possible prosecution.
